Learning Corner: Cell Structures & Processes

Fifth grade students helped the second grade students color cytoplasm, nuclei, and cell membranes in animal cells and chloroplasts, cell walls, and vacuoles in eukaryotic plant cells with crayons.

This year both the 5th and 2nd graders at Ivywood are learning about cell structures and processes.  At the end of their unit, the students in the 5th grade class made a coloring book to share some facts that they learned about cells with the 2nd grade class.  While presenting their coloring book to the 2nd graders, the 5th graders explained that cells are basic structural units of life and that all living things are made up of one or more cells.  The coloring book illustrated that eukaryotic or animal cells have a nucleus but prokaryotic or unicellular amoeba cells do not.  After their talk, the fifth grade students helped the second grade students color cytoplasm, nuclei, and cell membranes in animal cells and chloroplasts, cell walls, and vacuoles in eukaryotic plant cells with crayons.
