Our fifth grade class is currently studying plant structures and processes. As to learn more about the reproduction of flowering plants, they cut open a cantaloupe, tomato, orange, apple, and avocado. They then inspected their enlarged ovaries (fruits) with seeds, cut the seeds open, and inspected the seed fragments under a microscope. The students noted their knowledge, questions and observations on a “Know, Wonder, Learn” (KWL) chart. The fifth grade class has also planted some seeds and are inspecting them over time.
