Oh no, it is an oil spill! On Earth Day this week, Mrs. Reinhart’s class learned just how hard it is to clean up an oil spill in the ocean. Each group of 3rd graders had a boat full of “crude oil” in their ocean, problems occurred, and the crude oil spilled into the ocean. The students then tried cleaning up the oil spill, first with a spoon, then with a cotton ball and lastly with a sponge. The students quickly learned that cleaning up oil is not as easy as it looks. They discovered they were removing more water than oil in their cleanup process. The students also discovered that no matter how hard they tired, their ocean was still polluted and not as clean as it was in the beginning.
