Learning Corner: Plant Structures and Processes

Student dissecting and studying cantaloupe and tomato Our fifth grade class is currently studying plant structures and processes.  As to learn more about the reproduction of flowering plants, they cut open a cantaloupe, tomato, orange, apple, and avocado.  They then inspected their enlarged ovaries (fruits) with seeds, cut the seeds open, and inspected the seed fragments under a microscope.  The students noted their knowledge, questions and observations on a “Know, Wonder, Learn” (KWL) chart.  The fifth grade class has also planted some seeds and are inspecting them over time.
